On May 7th, I was again invited as one of the judges for the Annual Senior Design Contest of the Mechanical Engineering Department of Columbia School of Engineering. This year’s competition consisted of eight teams with designs ranging from a solar heater that tracked the sun to a bike that stored the braking energy in the form of compressed air to be used on the next start up to a stair climber. Several of these projects used components donated by SDP/SI. With about 20 judges voting, the bike was declared the overall winner taking into account such factors as the concept, design, analysis, execution and the final presentation. The parts donated by SDP/SI were very much appreciated by the students. Dr. Hitoshi Tanaka
